Dayton Buoy Bash 2017

Ohio State Narrowly Wins at the 2017 Dayton Buoy Bash

On a cold Saturday, April 22nd, the University of Dayton Waterski Team hosted the Dayton Buoy Bash. The buoy bash took place at Sunsite Lake in Moraine, Ohio. Thirty collegiate skiers from across the Midwest attended the tournament. Schools that competed included Central Michigan, Dayton, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Cincinnati, Western Michigan, and Ohio University.

Not only did this tournament get everyone ready for the upcoming water ski season, but it also allowed skiers to become accustomed to new tournament rules. More specifically, slalom skiers were able to utilize the mini course to get points for their team. The mini course, which is marked by green buoys, typically is used as a training tool for new skiers. However, now competitors can get ½ a buoy if they successfully make it around green buoys. While the mini course rules were new to the skiers, it was also new to the judges. Officials now have to focus on the red buoys and the green buoys. You can see where this might get kind of complicated.

On the other hand, the colder weather made it complicated for skiers to loosen up the muscles after a long winter. Skiers participated in both slalom and trick events. Slalom started early Saturday morning. First place winners include Ben Brennan in men’s slalom and Riley Daulton in women’s slalom, both hailing from The Ohio State University. After slalom took place skiers competed in trick. First place winners include Tyler Miller from the University of Cincinnati for men’s trick and Riley Daulton from The Ohio State University for women’s trick.

Brrrrr….

With a high of 55 degrees, skiers stood by a toasty campfire throughout the day to stay warm. After the last skier finished there was an awards ceremony for the top three skiers in each category. For the team placements, The Ohio State University placed 1st, University of Dayton placed 2nd, and University of Cincinnati placed 3rd.
