WCWSA Midwinter Captains Meeting Agenda

Imperial Palace Hotel Conference Room, Las Vegas, February 7, 2009, 8:30am

  1. Welcome:
    1. Introduce executive board, introduction of team captains. Establish quorum.
  2. Approve minutes from 2008
    1. Motion Evan, second Darrin, all in favor
  3. NCWSA Board Meeting review: Harley and Amanda
    1. Starting speed for men’s and women’s 15.5 mph
    2. All stars does not count towards spring eligibility
    3. All stars will have record slalom, starting this year
    4. Medical Red shirt
    5. Team Trials standards have change
    6. Nationals will be seated off of rankings, teams will no longer be penalized on ranking list
    7. No towboat charge this year
    8. We are adopting new AWSA trick rules, its basically a gate now, no more may or must, Harley will send out the new course
    9. Harley went over USA-WS review, we got more funding then we thought we are going to get
    10. April first deadline for 2010 All Star bid, WWU might bid, SAC a possibly also
    11. Bumper Stickers and store coming to NCWSA
    12. Recruiting database is coming soon to NCWSA
  4. AWSA Western Region Meeting review: Jeff Rush
    1. Meeting was Jan 10, in Reno
    2. Scholarship AWSEF, western AWSA gives money to it, they give 6 scholarships a year
    3. WCWSA got a lot of praise at they meeting and they want to make it more assessable to collegiate skiers to participate
    4. Question: Who gets regional guide? It’s about 50/50. Barry Young will have extra copies and we can get extra from there or you can call HQ
    5. Online registration, cuts down on paperwork, its available to all USA-WS members
    6. Rule changes and clarifications:

i. 07 boats with GPS are still usable in 09 tournaments

ii. if there is not a boat available you can use a 06 if you get approval from Barry Young Western EVP

iii. Rule change if a skier isn’t reading on the dock b/c of a ripped binding or equipment problem you now have 3 minutes as decided by the dock officials

iv. Boat timing for jump, we now have to report all three timing segments

v. If skier has a delay (10 min) after first pass due to uncontrollable circumstances (weather, boat, etc.) skier can take a protective pass or start over without a protected score.

viii. AWSA regionals is in CO this year, entry fees are higher unless you use online registration, schedule changed

  1. Team Reports: Each team give a 5 minute report on current team status, number of active and social members, tournament participation for 2009, current issues or problems facing team, any assistance needed from WCWSA or other teams in region:
    1. UCSD:

i. Had a bunch of seniors graduate but have new and transfers, really poor and boat is slowly dying, have about 20 skiers

    1. SDSU:

i. Have about 11 skiers, school gave them more money, their boats dying too, looking to higher a paid coach

    1. USD:

i. Have about 14 people hoping to get them out to tournaments, members seem enthusiastic, club sport office is giving them issues especially with traveling

    1. UCLA:

i. Grew a lot and have a bunch of talent freshman, their boat is also dying, regionals was a huge success for them, there club sports office is very happy, Elisha has done a ton of work, looking for jump skis

    1. CSUN: not here

i. Jeff has had some contact and they have less than 10 skiers they are trying to get things going, they want to keep going

    1. ASU:

i. Boats good, lakes good, team getting smaller

    1. UCSB:

i. Ton of graduating seniors, they have one to many boats, have about 15 dedicated people but need girls desperately, 09 will be a rebuilding year

    1. Cal Poly:

i. Have about 25 active members, a ton of new people, old people have left, they’ll be at all the tournaments

    1. UCD:

i. Lost about half the team at about 18 people, should be at every tournament, biggest issue is school, they sold the old boat but the school won’t give them the money, they would like to see more people go to downhill water skiing next year, next year they will try to call everyone versus email, possibly try to hold it a week earlier, They did a lot of fundraising and did a newsletter to alumni, family and friends and got a money, they also did a letter drive, also did a banquet and auction

    1. SAC:

i. 7 to 10 members, they lost a lot to graduation, finances are good, lost money because they didn’t go to Nationals, boats good

    1. Chico:

i. Have about 25 people active, plan at being at al the tournaments, currently looking for a new coach, BK might take over, they need a new boat, finances are good

    1. St. Mary’s:

i. Not just Brian, lots of interest and he thinks the new speed will help a lot, as a new team they could use new equipment, sharing or passing down

    1. UNR:

i. At 20 people and should be increasing, UNR is taking a 40% budget cut so they have no equipment, no boat and no water, but they have people

    1. UW: not here

i. Please send fundraising ideas to UW, they have a couple of skiers, they are trying to build, thanks to WWU for helping them

ii. Brian Morris is at Iowa, he’s out of eligibility but wants to help start a team

    1. WWU:

i. Have about 20 skiers, a lot who haven’t skied, they didn’t have a boat in the fall, it was rough, weather is bad too, its been hard on skiing, they hope to make it to more tournaments, this year there we need to be much better at Glass cutters

    1. WSU: Same as UW
    2. Utah is still interested and were trying to get things going
    3. CO has a string team they are currently skiing in the Midwest
    4. OR seems new to water skiing, Louie is graduating and is trying to help out, still kind of small

*** send fundraising ideas to AW and she’ll put them all together and put them up on the website

*** Try to keep participation in tournaments up and support other teams.

  1. Conference Chair Reports: Give report on any teams not in attendance at meeting, contacts and work with new and returning teams, any other issues / problems from tournaments last year:
    1. Pacific: Jeff Rush:

i. Long beach has a old WWU skier their but is super busy

ii. Pomona and Irvine has interested skiers

iii. Brian D’s brother is going to USC, if he interested we’ll help

    1. Northwest: Darren Hall:

i. Central WA has talked to WWU they might be at Glass cutters, get us contact info

ii. Trying to help St. Mary’s and Reno as much as he could

iii. Mentioned boats are going to be hard for tournaments this year, plan in advanced

    1. NIRSA

i. NCWSA is going again this year and will pass on leads to conference chairs to follow up on

  1. NCWSA Committee member nominations: review current committee’s and eligibility criteria, select new members to committee’s:
    1. AAC: Luke gave an overview of his involvement
    2. Membership: Colin gave overview, they were waiting for the recruiting database to go up, it will be a good resource to teams
    3. Operations: Luke gave overview
    4. Awards:
    5. Marketing: Katie was on the marketing committee and didn’t hear much
    6. Elections:

i. Membership committee: Lashley nominates Darrin, second, Luke, all in favor and Colin and Lashley, both on the committee and Matt

ii. Operations: Luke, Darrin, Brian D, All on committees

iii. Awards: Elisha on committee

iv. Marketing: Jeff, Brian D, Sprinkles,

v. AAC: Brian D, Luke, Karl (nominated was Karl, Kevin, Matt, Luke and Brian)

  1. WCWSA Committee’s Reports:
    1. Marketing:

i. Get a regional committee together, Chris can chair, Luke, Brian, Sprinkles help him, Jeff’s dad’s company can help with getting videos together, chairman will help more this year. Amanda will help with sponsorships

    1. Treasurers report:

i. Set aside 250 for marketing

iii. One of the boats from Regionals and Nationals was damaged and UCLA and ASU had to pay. Suggest taking pictures of boats before hand.

iv. Amanda motion for WCWSA to pay $500 and the participating regional and nationals to split the remaining $500, second Greg, All in favor

  1. Approve 2009 Budget:
    1. We’ll put numbers into an email budget and approve later
  2. 2009 tournaments:
    1. Possibly move Oktoberfest next year to Nov 7 and 8th
    2. Officials, discounts for teams

i. Aquatic center is doing clinics April 24 and 25

ii. AWSAwest.net has all the official, junior development information

iii. Conduct, no alcohol at all even for friends and family

  1. Decline in participation / number of events for 2008:
    1. Reason’s why, what can be done better? Too many events, too few, timing, ect.
    2. Discuss what we can do better as a region to support teams hosting events.
  2. 2009 Event Bids:
    1. April 4 - 5: Davis
    2. April 18 - 19: state
    3. April 25 - 26: wwu
    4. May 2 - 3: southern team, ucla and ucsd co-hosting
    5. May 9 - 10: Possible non- All Star counting tournament, cp/ucsb, Winchester sac
    6. May 19 - 19: All Stars: Beaver Lake, North Carolina
    7. Oct 3-4, sac
    8. Sept 19 20 Chico
    9. Sept 26 and 27 asu hopefully Cheyenne
    10. Regionals: Oct 10 – 11: Northwest School: st marys, shortline
    11. Nov 7-8 Oktoberfest

    2. Plan for Friday night more organized stuff with other regions
    3. Western Region didn’t get wild card this year, Midwest did, so there is still one wildcard spot open
  2. 2009 All Stars Team:

    2. Exceptions to WCWSA All Star team guidelines:
    3. Motion for a one year exception, to ski one tournament in fall and 2 in spring to be eligible for 2009 All-Stars, Motioned matt, Brian B, all in favor
  3. 2009 Team Development Scholarship:
    1. Report on how it was utilized by UCLA: They were able to run regionals, they have gotten some new gear and are going to Miami over spring break
    2. Review eligibility rules: Bids due by Feb 21 if you want to apply
    3. Application for 2009 due by Feb 21, decision by 3 D1 captains due March 7?

    2. Why are we not utilizing it much, how can we get better use from it
    3. Motion by Evan to move over completely to NCWSA but keep ncwsawest.com as our domain name. All in favor

    1. Do we stay with yahoo groups, how to make sure everyone is on it

    1. Regional Growth:

i. Regional Development- Marketing committee getting information to Jr dev camps and clinics this year and get the camp and clinic dates to our group if people want to volunteer

ii. Collegiate development: Do weekends at lakes to get teams more time on water

iii. B skiing: can we get it going better, tournaments should try to plan for it and if its not going to happen let captains know

iv. Online trained drivers

v. St Mary’s and Reno comment: equipment is needed, let Davis know so that they can get a equipment list going for spring opener
