Unbeatable.
Dominant.
Untouchable.
These are all terms that could describe the United States in the World University Championships. The Stars and Stripes have won every University World Water Ski Championship since the inception of the event. This includes the event of 1997, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2009 and 2011.
The 2011 United States team was made up of the following NCWSA athletes: Brian Detrick (St. Mary’s), Adam Pickos (Louisiana Monroe), Dylan Schaffer (Alabama), Tyler Lorenz (Wisconsin Madison), Alex Lauretano (Louisiana Monroe) and Lauren Morgan (Florida Southern). Coach was Robert Rhyne and Manager was Harley Wallace.
Due to the unique geographic location of the team, they all had different strategies for getting ready for this prestigious world championship. Some travelled down to Chile early to get used to the site and weather (Pickos and Morgan), some were able to ski at home (Lauretano), some just focused on staying in shape (Detrick and Schaffer) and one had to use other methods like snow skiing, running and log splitting due to his ski lake having a foot and a half of ice (Lorenz).
The team had a large variety of US National Team experience from Alex who has been on over 10 US teams, to Dylan who was on his first US team. The title was a true team effort with US athletes in the finals of all six events. Due to each member of the team having such a strong preliminary round, the team all felt like they had the tournament in good hands after just the preliminary rounds. Beyond the gold medal that the team won there was a lot of individual hardware as well. Adam Pickos took home the silver medal in Slalom after a run-off for gold. He followed that up with a gold medal in Trick. Lauren Morgan took home gold in jump and walked away with the bronze in overall. Alex Lauretano took home the gold in Trick, earned a silver in Jump, and was named the prestigious Overall University World Champion with a gold medal in overall. The US came away with 7 individual medals, including 4 of the possible 8 gold medals.
Part of the reward of representing the US in international competition is bonding with athletes from other countries. When asked who the US team bonded with the most, they all had different answers. New Zealand, Italy, Czech Republic and Chile were all named. And it was no surprise that when asked who was the biggest threat to taking the title, the silver and bronze medalists Czech Republic and Chile were both mentioned.
While opinions were different in some topics, there was one question that everyone agreed on – the Miranda’s world-class water ski site. Here are some quotes from the Americans.
-“It is my favorite site in the world. It can be tough, but it is definitely the most beautiful.”
-“Perfect. The best conditions I have ever skied.”
-“It’s awesome! Can’t wait to come back for the elite Worlds in 2013!”
-“The Miranda’s site is an excellent place to ski”
-“One of the best sites I have ever been to”.
When asked what it was like to compete for the Stars and Stripes, there was a common theme of honor and pride. Reigning Women’s NCWSA Jump Record Holder Lauren Morgan described it as “Its awesome, there’s nothing like it.” Reigning Men’s US National Open Overall Champion Tyler Lorenz who was just on his second US team said “A real honor. And to come away with the title? Unforgettable. Something I didn’t think I would ever accomplish. I’m still in the disbelief stage.”
Congratulations to Team USA. A very well deserved world title won by a team of champions.

Male Athlete of the Year: Zack Worden of ULM Zack capped off an amazing ski year with top performances at the NCWSA 2011 Nationals. Slaloming through 38 off, and finishing 2nd with a ½ buoy at 39 off, and earning 4800 pts. in tricks also placing second in the event. He reminded us that he is not just a jump specialist, but an accomplished overall skier. The final day of the event, Zack broke the longest standing NCWSA record, by jumping 195 ft. winning the event and securing the tournament overall individual and team championship.
Female Athlete of the Year: Lauren “Poochie” Morgan of FSC Lauren at this past year, did something that we have not seen in a long time; a freshman setting a national record. At the first tournament of the year, Lauren jumped 154 ft., 1 ft. shy of Alex's record set just last year. We all knew it would only be a matter of time before the record was hers. On her first jump at Nationals, she set the record at 157 ft. She placed 9th and 5th in slalom and tricks respectively at Nationals, and finished nationally ranked at 6th, 5th and 1st in Slalom trick and jump respectively.
Male Outstanding Leader of the Year: Nick Quaglia of UCD Nick early in the semester, suffered a concussion while jumping, but did not give up his responsibilities as a team leader. The doctors advised him not to ski for a number of weeks to allow time to heal. Where many would have handed over responsibility to someone else, he showed commitment to his team. He attended the next week's tournament to root on his teammates from shore, and help run the event where he could. He then took responsibility for arranging all the necessary eligibility paperwork for each member of the team so they could compete at regionals. Instead of filing for a medical red-shirt, Nick attended and competed at Nationals after being cleared by his doctors to contribute to the team point total. He has shown a great dedication to his team, and they have absolutely benefited from it.
Female Outstanding Leader of the Year: Maddy Baldwin of IOW Maddy has been an integral part of the University of Iowa's success this past season. Maddy was president this past year and she led her team to regionals for the first time in 8 years, and through a wildcard selection, the teams first ever appearance at nationals. None of this would've been possible without her. This isn't just because of her remarkable water ski abilities, but because she transformed her team. Ever since Maddy joined collegiate skiing 4 years ago she helped out with everything she possibly could. At every midwest tournament Maddy is either in charge, or running around scoring, judging, organizing and also skiing. She has been on the AAC committee for the past 2 years and is always looking for new ways to improve and enhance the sport. She is also alumni liaison for the midwest region. For this position Maddy has really taken charge and is doing new and creative things to keep alumni involved.
Team of the Year University of Wisconsin Lacrosse took the midwest by storm this past season. They won every tournament this past fall in the midwest, and were the epitome of a team in both spirit and skiing as skiers achieved personal bests throughout the season. They took first at Midwest Regionals and made it to nationals for the first time ever, and it was D1 Nationals. Each individual on this team worked very hard to improve their skiing abilities and they all came together as a team. They supported each other and helped out when they could, all of this led to their success this past season. |

The Warhawks held off the ULL last weekend without having Worden jump. They appear to be the team to beat. |

LOUISIANA LAFAYETTE |
The Ragin Cajuns fall just one spot off the top of the leaderboard, if the Warhawks slip up, ULL will be nipping at their heels. There are also 2 injured skiers who might be back later in the season. |

The Mocs are living dangerously with no 5th seeded skier to back up their scores. But if everyone skis to the top of their game, they are a force. |

The Tars are clearly a step below Florida Southern, but how they will stack up against the rest of the country remains to be seen. They were missing their top female this weekend as well. |

The Crimson Tide did not send their full team to the first tournament of the year. What will that full team look like? We will have to wait and see. |

WISCONSIN LACROSSE |
The Eagles are the biggest surprise and biggest movers of the poll, shooting up 11 spots to #6. They have terrific depth and really crushed the rest of the field in the season opener in Iowa. Can they do it again this weekend? Will their first nationals be in Division 1? |

The Sun Devils have not skied yet this season. This weekend will tell us more about life without Storm in the desert. |

The Boilermakers were able to thoroughly beat their competition in Michigan this past weekend. Trick and Slalom are deep and consistent. How will that jump team hold up when facing the rest of the Midwest? |
| 9 |

TEXAS STATE |
The Bobcats also looked quite good in the season opener. Their men's team is solid and the women didn't ski to potential last weekend. Can they put it all together for a Division 1 invitation? |

CLEMSON |
The Tigers also made a big jump in the poll this week with a 8 spot leap into the top 10. The men's team is strong, and actually has more firepower than what was shown in the first week. The women will determine just how far they go. |

WISCONSIN MADISON |
The Badgers took home 2nd place last weekend, behind their in-state rivals. Men's team is looking solid, just how much more can the women improve before Regionals? They are still sitting in Division 1 right now, but not by very much. |

TEXAS A&M |
The Aggies men's team has more in the tank, let's see if they show it this week. They also lack a depth after the 3rd rotation. Women's team needs to step up to challenge the Bobcats for Division 1. |

UC DAVIS |
The Aggies went from unranked to number 13 in the poll, after their win at the Chico State Opener. Rumor has it that Nason their best skier is considering not skiing Regionals. Could be the difference between them getting to Division 1, or not. |

The Fighting Golden Panda Bears once again are a force to be reckoned with fresh off their season opening win in the tournament that they hosted as well. Paul Tierney's 2 at 38off was the second best slalom score in the whole country on opening weekend. |

The Hawkeyes are appearing in the National Poll for the first time this week. They are extremely balanced between the men and women and across all three events. This balance could take them to their first every nationals. |

The Aztecs have a stud in Robert Morris. Apparently their men's team will bring even more firepower in future tournaments. |

There is a full slate of tournaments in week 1 - all around the country.
**The East will feature three tournaments this weekend.
Florida Southern is hosting their annual back-to-back, head-to-head tournament doubleshot on Friday 9/9 and Saturday 9/10. It is a two team tournament pitting the two florida skiing powerhouses of Rollins College and Florida Southern College against each other in the FSC 14 and FSC 15 tournaments. These will take place on Lake Grew in Polk City Florida.
Further north in the Eastern Region - Georgia Tech will be hosting their Fall SAC tournament in Talking Rock, Georgia. This will be the first glimpse at what Alabama is bringing to the table this season.
**The South Central has one tournament on the schedule for this weekend. The whole region will descend upon Martindale Texas for the 25th Annual UT Fall Classic.
**The West Region also has one tournament this weekend, as many of those schools still aren't in session yet. Those that are in session, will be heading to beautiful Sky Lake in Durham California for the Chico State Fall Opener.
**The Midwest Region rounds out the opening weekend schedule with a triple-shot of collegiate skiing deliciousness. In the western part of the region will be the Hawkeye Ski Fest, hosted by the University of Illinois in Evansdale Iowa.
The southern third of the midwest will be treated to the Missouri State Fall Showdown, hosted at Lake Freddie in Hartville Missouri.
Finally in the eastern third of the midwest - most of the great lakes conference teams will face-off at the Jepawhit Collegiate Ski Fest - hosted by the University of Michigan-Flint.
Stay Tuned to www.ncwsa.com as tonight we will reveal the NCWSA Poll Preseason Top 20 teams in the country. The rankings will be updated every week as the scores come in. |

A new web-based online system has been implemented in 2011, which supports both Team Roster Management and Team Entry and Rotation Planning. All NCWSA Teams should now use these tools to manage their respective Rosters of team skiers, and to prepare their Team Entry and Rotation plan for each tournament which they are entering. Access to this system is provided through the USA Water Ski Member’s Only area. Team Captains or Tournament Registrars should access these features by first signing onto the Member’s Only area. That is accomplished through clicking the Member/Club Login link, which is located in the upper right corner of the USA Water Ski main web page, then signing in with their personal membership number, rather than club credentials. Once signed in, then Captains or Registrars should click on the Collegiate Registration menu item, located in the left navigation panel on the Member’s Only main page. Here is a link that will take you directly to that Member’s Only area sign-in page: https://www.usawaterski.org/members/login/index.asp After selecting either the Team Captain Tools or Registrar Tools item from the Collegiate Registration sub-menu, then further information on the features and usage of this system is available through the Instructions button, which you will find located on any of those subsequent detail pages. Those dealing with this system for the first time should certainly review the Overview material at the top of that section. Please note that paper documents, or Excel spreadsheets, or other forms of Team Entry and Rotation Plans used in the past should no longer be used to communicate such information to NCWSA tournament Registrars – instead, this new online system should be used byall teams for entry to all NCWSA tournaments, beginning immediately. Registrars will then subsequently download this entry information in their Registration Download spreadsheet, which has been newly revised for 2011 to incorporate these details now being supplied online by the team Captains. As the beginning of the fall season is just about upon us, all NCWSA Team Captains should immediately begin reviewing and updating their team rosters, particularly with regard to entering freshmen and any other new team skiers who will be participating this fall. Then they will be prepared to create Entry plans for particular tournaments when those approach.

2.Gender distribution shall be 4/2 or 3/3.
3.Team selection scores in each event shall be the sum of 50% of the top score and 50% of the average of the top 3 scores calculated from all rounds of scores in class "E L or R" events in all tournaments, during the period stated in section 1 above.
4. Scoring shall be based on the 1,000-point system where, for each round, 1,000 points will be the highest base score of the skiers in each event. Base scores will stay the same throughout the tournament and will be determined by taking the average of the top two scores from any Class "E, L, or R" event during the time period specified in section 1 above.
Men's Tricks: (Skier's score x 1000) / (base score of top seed)
Women's Tricks: (Skier's score x 1000) / (base score of top seed)

8. The skier with the highest "event score" in a single event, not already on the team, will be substituted for the 6th position (or 5th if substitution for the 6th would result in more than four skiers of one sex) provided that such a substitution would increase the team score as described in the selection procedures.
9. The selection committee shall designate up to 4 alternates to the US team. The method of selecting these alternates will be at the discretion of the selection committee and not based on any fixed formula. Selected alternates will be given the opportunity of traveling with the team. However, it must be at their own expense unless they are called upon to compete, in which case they will be reimbursed for expenses beginning at the time they are officially called up.
10. Disclaimer: In the event of unforeseen circumstances which, in the opinion of the selection committee, render these procedures clearly ineffective, the committee may amend these procedures as necessary to accomplish the goals of NCWSA with 2/3rds affirmative vote of the full committee.

When a premier athlete sets their mind to something, sometimes there is nothing that can stand in their way. The collegiate water ski community was treated to such a display this Spring when standout athlete Alex Lauretano from University of Louisiana Monroe shattered the 5 year old women's trick record by posting a score of 4930 points. This record fell at the Polar Bear Classic at Stevenson Ski Ranch in Conroe Texas. The old record was held by past teammate Clementine Lucine (FSC) with a score of 4,530.
The pass involves ten unique tricks, with two repeated. Here is the record breaking run:
- Ski Line Back
- Front
- Back
- Wake 540 Front
- Back Flip
- Back Flip Half Twist Back
- Front (repeat)
- Reverse Back Flip Half Twist Back
- Back Flip Half Twist Front
- Back (repeat)
- Back Flip Full Twist Back To Back
- Reverse Back Flip Full Twist Back To Back
Alex stated that this is her usual hand pass in 3-event tournaments, although sometimes she gets a BB in time, which would have put the record over 5000 points in one pass.
The record-holder finds herself in very elite company. The other current NCWSA Record Holders are past World Champion Will Asher, past World Champion Jimmy Seimers, current World Record Holder Regina Jaquess, and past Junior World Champion Ryan Fitts. But within this elite company - Alex is the only athlete to currently hold 2 NCWSA Records. She is also the proud owner of the NCWSA Women's Jump Record - 155 Feet (47.7 meters).
When asked if breaking the NCWSA records was a goal of hers she said "Yes. I wasn't sure if I was going to do my last year of collegiate skiing, but thought it would be a fun change in my life and I really wanted to try and break the trick and jump records." Consider that mission accomplished.
The statement 'if at first you don't succeed, try try again' could apply to Alex's tireless pursuit of this record. In fact, she broke the trick record in the fall season but it wasn't approved due to not having the correct officials in place for the event. "I was really disappointed in the fall because I broke the record and it didn't get approved. So I really wanted to get another opportunity. I really loved it there (ULM) so I decided to stick around for more."
As if this record isn't impressive enough standing alone, its important to note that Alex had a hellacious jump crash at Collegiate Nationals in Texas in Fall 2010 where she separated her shoulder. When asked how she is doing health-wise she said "I took the whole winter off and after an MRI mid-January my Doctor said I could start skiing again. It's feeling pretty good, and I thought my shoulder was completely healed but I caught my arm in the water the other day doing a mobe (back flip full twist), and it really hurt my shoulder." Truly amazing that she shattered this record while clearly not even at 100% health.
NCWSA does not have the 6 flip regulation that international tournaments have in their rule book. Since Alex is quite fantastic at flipping, she weighed in on how many flips she thinks are possible in a 20 second pass. "I did a run with 7 flips a few seasons ago in a collegiate tournament, but it ended up not being more points, don't think I am quite fast enough" said Alex. "Some of the guys can definitely take advantage of that. I bet they could get 8 or 9 in."
Congratulations to Alex Lauretano on her terrific achievement. She ends her college career with 2 NCWSA Records to her name. |

The 2010 NCWSA Award Winners are:
Male Athlete of the Year: Storm Selsor of ASU
Storm has had an amazing year on the water. His year started by earning top honors at the 2010 All Stars in Elk Grove, CA at Shortline Lake in Slalom, Jump and Overall. This past fall he put out a record setting jump at the WCWSA fall opener in Arvin, CA at Ironwood Lake scoring 185’ after out jumping the 2nd grid. He went on to medal in each event at Nationals, and went home with the Individual Overall Championship. This year he has also stepped up as a leader for his team, and shows off his team spirit at every tournament he attends.
Female Athlete of the Year: Alex Lauretano of ULM
After transferring to ULM, Alex has had an incredible year of athletic dominance. During the fall season she unofficially broke the NCWSA women’s trick record with a run of 4930 pts., followed by an approved jump record of 155’. At Nationals, she helped ULM to a 2nd place finish with a 150’ jump after a horrific crash to win the event, followed by a brave 4th place toe trick run the following day in a splint.
Male Outstanding Leader of the Year: Matt Knafla of Iowa State
Matt has been serving as AAC Chairman for the past 2 years, and has expressed a great interest in serving on the NCWSA board. As his own skills on the water have improved, he uses a leadership by example approach to motivate the rest of his team to better themselves, and helped earn them the fantasy regionals wildcard spot for this year’s past nationals, where they had a very strong showing.
Female Outstanding Leader of the Year: Stephanie Elhoffer of Missouri State
This was Stephanie’s second year of being nominated. In the last year she has stepped up her level of involvement within the MCWSA, to hold positions as both Awards Chairman and Officials Chairman. She has also been filling the role of Media Coordinator for USA Waterski, helping bring the NCWSA back into the mainstream media. For these reasons and more, Stephanie was the obvious choice for the award this year.
Team of the Year: the Ragin’ Cajuns, ULL
ULL went from last season where they weren't even in the hunt for the championship to a winning season with some new recruits and upper classmen that stepped up their game and came together as a cohesive team to win it all. This team performed as they needed to do on the day they needed to do it. Their tenacity as individuals brought a team spirit and drive together that couldn't be beat this year. |
|
The 2010 NCWSA Awards are officially open for nominations. 5 Awards are given out each year: Male and Female Athlete of the Year, Male and Female Outstanding Leader of the Year, and Team of the Year. Nominations can be made by anyone. The nomination period will end Sunday, November 7th 2010 at 8:00pm (PST). Nominations can be sent via email to

The 21st team going to next years Natioanls will come out of the South Central Region. The Sc will get 3 teams in Division 1 and 3 teams in Division 2. Texas State and Texas led the way to squeak by Ohio State, Iowa State, and Cincy of the midwest by 64 points.
Each Region will qualify it’s top 5 teams for Nationals by order of placement at their respective Regionals. Teams finishing in the top 3 at Regionals will be awarded “DIVISION I” status at the Nationals and be allowed to compete for the coveted “NCWSA National Championship”. Teams finishing 4th and 5th at Regionals will make up “Division II” at Nationals where they will compete for the “NCWSA
Division II Championship”. Two wildcard spots will be given based on the following conditions. One (1) team will be picked based on the Region whose DII teams had the highest average at the previous year’s National. The second team will be pick by a simulated tournament in which three (3) teams from each region (not already attending Nationals) will have their average scores from that fall season put into a simulated tournament. The team which wins the tournament clinches the final wildcard spot. |
|
The NCWSA board has awarded the 2011 NCWSA Nationals to Tri Lakes in Zachary, LA. The tournament will be held October 13-15, 2011. This will be the 3rd NCWSA Nationals at this site in less than a decade, they hosted the 2004 and 2007 nationals. Glad to be back! |

The Corynn Cassidy Benefit Water Ski Tournament, a six-round pick and choose three-event water ski tournament to help offset medical expenses for an injured water skier, will be held Oct. 9-10 at Spray Lake in Wichita, Kan.
Cassidy, a three-event water skier from Champagne, Ill., was seriously injured earlier this summer and is currently going through an extensive recovery process. Some friends and fellow skiers have come together to raise funds to help offset some of her expected medical bills.
FMI, a machine shop in Wichita, and Northwestern Mutual are sponsoring the tournament. FMI and Northwestern Mutual will cover the tournament sanctioning fees and provide cash-prizes for the top-three skiers – $100, first place; $50, second place; and $25 third place – that raise the most financial donations.
“Since there is no entry fee for the tournament, we are encouraging people to have at least ten pledges for their scores,” says tournament organizer Zackary Steffen. “We hope that this will help raise more funds for Corynn. We also have it set up so if people can't make the tournament, they can still pledge for another skier and still be able to help Corynn with her astronomical medical bills.”
You can read more about Corryn’s story athttp://www.caringbridge.org/visit/corynncassidy.

Univeristy of Monroe's latest recruit, Alex Laurentano, demolished the NCWSA Women's trick record this past weekend at the 25th Hour Classic Tournament. Alex tricked 4930, and if passed by the NCWSA board, will surpass the previous record set by her old teammate at Florida Southern Clemetine Lucine. Alex also jumped 149 and help lead Monroe past rival Louisiana Lafayette who upended Monroe the previous weekend, should be a good showdown in Austin. |
|
Believe it or not another fun filled and competitive NCWSA season is here again. Shortly after Labor Day 75 teams from across the country will begin competition in hopes of Regional and Nationals participation and titles. University of Louisiana will be looking to defend their National title, but Alabama and Lafayette are hot on their trail this year. It should be a good one. The 32nd edition of the NCWSA Nationals will be held in Austin, TX October 14-16, for more information click the Nationals link up top. This years wildcard and the 21st team for Nationals will come out of the West while we await the final wildcard team shortly after Regionals. Good luck to everyone and have a great season.

|
The lake is set.
The judges are in place.
The boats are gassed up.
The water is glass.
The athletes have arrived.
The time has come for the 2010 NCWSA All-Stars.
The West Region is hosting for the first time since 2007, when they hosted an epic All-Stars at Borderline Lake in Blaine, Washington. Not only did they host that year, but they also snagged the All-Star team title in the process.
The Midwest Region has ruled since that event, currently on a 2-year winning streak. The Midwest were victors when they hosted in DuQuoin Illinois in 2008 and they also won in 2009 in the East Region at Beaver Lake in Ahoskie, North Carolina. That was the first time that the non-hosting region had won all-stars in 6 years.
Will the Midwest Region make it a three-peat?
Will the West Region defend home-water and win their 2nd All-Star title in 4 years?
Will the South Central put together a talent-filled team that can swipe the title away?
Will the East Region win their first title since 2005?
The only thing for sure is that the conditions will be great and the competition will be fierce.
